Naturopathic Principles
![]()
Naturopathic medicine is an integrated approach to health
that combines the wisdom and traditions of medical cultures of the past,
with modern science, technology and the medicine of today. It uses gentle,
natural approaches to stimulate and support the body’s own ability to
heal itself. It emphasizes on finding the root causes of disease and making
lasting changes to eliminate them by employing natural substances, free
from harmful side-effects and invasive techniques.
There are five main principles that naturopathic doctors conduct their practices by:
1. First, to do no harm.
Above all else, a naturopathic doctor must not use treatments that are potentially harmful to the patient or have harmful side effects. By applying medical knowledge, experience, and gentle natural substances, the doctor prevents putting the patient’s health at any risk.
2. To co-operate with the healing powers of nature.
The safest, most long lasting, and best way to heal someone is to stimulate the person’s own natural ability to heal them self. A naturopathic doctor supplements, and encourages the body’s own healing processes.
3. To address the fundamental causes of disease.
Merely treating symptoms of a disease can cause the disease to be suppressed, but not cured. By taking the time to thoroughly get to know the patient, a naturopathic doctor searches for the cause of the disease and attempts to remove it, while at the same time manages the symptoms.
4. To heal the whole person through individualized treatment.
Just as each person has unique fingerprints, their treatment must also be individualized to their specific needs. Disease or illness manifests itself differently from person to person. The goal of individualized treatment is to treat the whole person as well as the condition(s) they may be suffering from.
5. To teach the principles of healthy living and preventive medicine.
The key to staying healthy is:
• The empowerment of each person to control their own health
• Preventing disease in the future
By teaching people principles of healthy living, a naturopathic doctor
can empower them to maintain their health on a daily level and prevent
the onset of disease.
These principles can be found in the oath each naturopathic doctor takes upon graduation from their colleges.
Naturopathic Oath
I dedicate myself to the service of humanity as a practitioner of the art and science of naturopathic medicine.
Be precept, education and example, I will assist and encourage others to strengthen their health, reduce risks for disease, and preserve the health of our plant for ourselves and future generations. I will continually endeavour to improve my abilities. I will conduct my life and practice of naturopathic medicine with integrity and freedom from prejudice. I will keep confident what should not be divulged.
I will honour the principles of naturopathic medicine:
1. First, to do no harm.
2. To co-operate with the healing powers of nature.
3. To address the fundamental causes of disease.
4. To heal the whole person through individualized treatment.
5. To teach the principles of healthy living and preventive medicine.
With my whole heart, before these witnesses, as a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, I pledge to remain true to this oath.
